Which City Has 1000 Lakes?

Can you imagine that there is a city which is known to have 1000 lakes? Yes, you read it right! It is none other than Bangalore in India which is known to have 1000 lakes at the moment. The most bizarre part is that because of so many lakes, Bangalore is often referred to as the "city of lakes" as well.

To ensure that these lakes come into some kind of use, the lakes are connected with quite a few man-made tanks as well. But are all these lakes in Bangalore natural and which is the most popular one?

Bangalore - The City Of Lakes

The history of lakes in Bangalore dates back to the times of the Cholas when they had created tons of lakes to serve the needs of the people. The Southern kings had an innate art to amplify the number of waterbodies in any city and Bangalore stood as the centre. Although all the thousand lakes are not operational till now because of the concrete jungle which has popped up, it remains a city with too many lakes.

The good part about these lakes is that people have loved the lakes till now and they often find some time to spend some time. The lakes have been neglected for a long and the worst part is that many of them were closed down due to the rise in several offices and apartments. However, the citizens of Bangalore have now started to become much more aware and the government has started to make an active effort to maintain the Lakes.

Popular Lakes in Bangalore

Till now, Bangalore has quite a few popular lakes and the good thing is that you can even choose to go for a boating or picnic session. Some of the most popular ones in this genre are:

  • Ulsoor Lake

  • Agara Lake

  • Madiwala Lake

  • Sankey Lake

  • Hebbal Lake

  • Nagavara Lake

  • Bellandur Lake

Ensure that you check the timings once before you plan the outing as each of the lakes has its own time. Although the Madiwala Lake is the biggest which spreads across an area of 114.3 hectares, the others are quite popular too.

Although all 1000 lakes are not accessible anymore, these surely have a history that is worth remembering. The government of Bangalore is trying relentlessly to make things work. The lakes are a pride for the city of Bangalore.
